News and Events - 2010>>FEMA Administrator Fugate Marks the Beginning of National Hurricane Preparedness Week The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) are partnering during National Hurricane Preparedness Week to share valuable hurricane preparedness information. FEMA continues to work with state, local, tribal, federal and private sector partners to increase preparedness and coordinate response and recovery in the case of a hurricane or disaster. If you were unable to join the webinar, >>here is the PowerPoint and transcript of the meeting. >>FEMA Uses Facebook As Tool In Response to Tennessee Flooding, May 11, 2010 The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency (TEMA) today announced an online hub for collaborative information-sharing through Facebook for the response and recovery to severe weather and flooding in Tennessee. The webpage, >>http://www.facebook.com/TNDisasterInfo hosts an online community where those affected by the disaster and those active in the response can share information. FEMA and TEMA, as well as their federal, state, and local and voluntary agency partners are posting recovery tips and updates, including shelter locations and details on how to access disaster assistance. FEMA and TEMA will also upload videos and photos from the affected area. The >>Pass It On Center is developing an emergency response system based on an existing network of Assistive Technology (AT) Centers. At the foundation of this project is a national survey designed to develop an understanding of the current involvement of a variety of programs in efforts related to assistive technology reuse and emergency planning, management and response. Information obtained will be vital to developing effective emergency response systems for all populations. >>Save the Date: 4th Annual HAZUS Conference, August 23-25, 2010The 4th Annual HAZUS Conference will be held August 23-25, 2010 in Indianapolis, Indiana. The HAZUS Conference provides a unique opportunity for users of all levels in a wide variety of professions (e.g., first responders, local government decision makers, planners, GIS specialists) to share expertise and experience in the development and use of HAZUS-MH. The Center for Rebuilding Sustainable Communities after Disasters (CRSCAD) at the University of Massachusetts Boston is hosting this July 12-15, 2010 conference to bring together stakeholders from around the world to share information and develop strategies around some of the core issues concerning the place of the elderly and people with disabilities in local, regional, national and international post-disaster reconstruction policies, plans and programs. CRSCAD is also sponsoring an international student essay competition on the topic of the conference. The deadline for submitting materials for presentation and the Student Competition is January 30, 2010. >> National Evacuation Conference, February 3 - 5, 2010 This conference will bring together the fields of transportation and emergency management to discuss evacuation planning to accommodate the needs of all people before, during and after a major disaster. For more information about emergency preparedness as it relates to people with disabilities read >>Effective Emergency Management: Making Improvements for Communities and People with Disabilities. >>HUD & DHS Launch New Web Site to Receive Public Input on Disaster Recovery, October 29, 2009 The departments of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and Homeland Security (DHS) have announced the launch of >>DisasterRecoveryWorkingGroup.gov, a new interagency website that will allow stakeholders to submit ideas for disaster recovery; articulate objectives for recovery assistance going forward; identify examples of best practices; raise challenges and obstacles to success; and share thoughts, experiences and lessons learned. >> FEMA & FCC Adopt Standards for Wireless Carriers to Receive and Deliver Emergency Alerts Via Mobile Devices, December 9, 2009The Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) have announced the adoption of the design specifications for the development of a gateway interface that will enable wireless carriers to provide customers with timely and accurate emergency alerts and warnings via their cell phones and other mobile devices. To ensure that persons with disabilities who subscribe to wireless services receive these emergency alerts, the FCC adopted rules in 2008 that will require participating wireless carriers to transmit messages with both vibration cadence and audio attention signals.
